HTC RE

A new silly looking camera from HTC is coming soon, the "RE". It can be remote controlled from android or ios, but who knows if they'll disclose enough info to write a custom control app for it or not. Might be of use for book scanning if you can customize the control of it.

Re: Simple, easy to build, ~600pg/hr, very portable scanner

I built a light system that consists of a little current regulator module and 4 Cree LEDs, each stuck (with a chunk of aluminum for a heat sink) on the end of a stalk of heavy copper wire so I can bend the wire into position. Two on each side of the book positioned to avoid direct reflection into th...

Re: Simple, easy to build, ~600pg/hr, very portable scanner

It would complicate a wonderfully simple design, but you could eliminate the scaling change from page to page if you could fix the platen distance from the camera and press the book up from the bottom against the glass. I keep thinking about a design like that, but haven't managed to work out any de...

Re: Anti-Reflective Glass

I got some museum glass at a local picture frame shop that had some leftover from a framing job.

Re: Using a Cell Phone to Scan Books

I haven't tried a phone, but I am working on android software to use for scanning with my Samsung Galaxy Camera. You can read about what I've done so far here: http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/software/andyscan/andyscan.html I'm working on hardware at the moment that can trigger lights when I hav...

Re: Android Interchangeable Lens Camera coming

Of course Polaroid also announced the android SC1630 and it never appeared, so I'm highly skeptical of any Polaroid products now :-).

Re: Single page scanner - Glare of page

I'm doing a similar single page scanner (which I'm working on making far too elaborate because it is fun :-). Instead of a plastic "platen", I got a cheap piece of leftover museum glass from a framing shop and it does seem to cut way down on reflections. You can see an example photo near t...

Re: Camera Triggering

I don't see much of a feature added by having the operator's voice triggering the shutter. Either push buttons or photoelectric triggering seem the way to go. Should be fairly easy to set up a light beam apparatus -- after lining up your page, pass your hand through the light beam & circuitry w...

Re: Camera Triggering

In my ongoing work on building my android camera app, I've obtained a Samsung Galaxy Camera, and it has a new trigger technique available even without running my custom camera app: Voice control. If there isn't much noise in the environment, and you turn voice control on, you can say "shoot&quo...

Re: Google open-sources a DIY page-turning scanner

I'd still love to give my post-it note scheme a try someday, but I don't think my mechanical skills are up to it. I envision a book height roller covered in post-it note stickum that you lay down on the page you want to turn then slightly lift and rotate. Maybe some short bristle brushes to hold the...
