Re: Austin Hackerspace kit build
Just a quick note on the 'crooked cradle' problem -- in addition to making sure your cameras are mounted straight, double-check that the vertical parts of the cradle supports are all the way into the grooves. The sloped front of the tongue can fool you into putting them too far forward (to form a sm...

Re: Linear Book Scanner with auto page-turn
Yes, this is being (mis-)reported as "Google Books open-sources their scanner technology" (on sites such as http://hackaday.com/2012/11/16/google-books-team-open-sources-their-book-scanner/ ) but it is, as noted, actually a 20% project. Really interesting approach -- I think if you watch t...

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner
Regarding the Canon A2200, I notice on the CHDK thread that this model does not support Remote Capture. There's a workaround that involves the PTP extension, but maybe somebody can chime in and explain how important Remote Capture is for various software packages used by the group?

Re: Web system for presenting multipage volumes (pdf, djvu)
That's great! Brewster's team is full of wizards, and I've always been impressed by what they've accomplished with their reader interface. Look forward to more info... or perhaps a local meetup for SoCal folks interested in this topic?

Re: Web system for presenting multipage volumes (pdf, djvu)
You know, that does sound very interesting... I know there's a lot of work going on with these systems you mentioned -- teams at UVa working on extending Fedora, etc. We might start by figuring out at which level each of these components works, in a kind of schematic view (framework, front-end, or s...

Re: Web system for presenting multipage volumes (pdf, djvu)
Thanks Misty, this is actually a very useful way of thinking about the issues(s): - a retrieval mechanism which indexes the books and provides a search interface - a public interface for accessing the books - a web-based, non-Flash based reader for the book files themselves It strikes me that a lot ...
