Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Wolf Faust sells really affordable IT8 charts that will work great with Argyll! He even has a non-glossy one. Yep, all 100% libre! The primary tools so far are Argyll (AGPL3) and dcraw (GPL2); additional tools in the script for this will also be 100% libre too. I think it'll really be useful to hav...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Ugh, one would have hoped that I would have remembered by this point in my life about different rendering intents when converting colour spaces, no? Absolute colorimetric intent, in this circumstance, prevents most clipping when converting to ProPhoto RGB, and results in a remarkably accurate colour...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
All right, starting first off with the IT8 chart itself: it8_noglare.jpg This is, even at a glance, obviously much better looking. However - I came across some interesting issues with other photos in this set, which suggests to me that I need to refine how I'm producing profiles. That profile was cr...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
OK, I got the lighting under control - the problem with the test chart was 100% due to the overhead lights in the room. I had the rare opportunity to black out half the floor for the sake of scanning stuff today, so I'll have some beautiful sample photos to post tomorrow.

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Good question. I'm fortunate enough to be dealing with even illumination right now, glare aside, but that could definitely be an issue.
Evening out the level of illumination over the frame before you do this would probably be a good idea.

Re: Scantailor preprocess script
Wow, this looks fantastic! Going to have to borrow some of your techniques for my own postprocessing script.

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Something else I'd come across I should mention: because of the nature of input profiles, colour correction is really weird if you try to do it using the profile that Argyll produces. What Argyll produces is an input profile - that is, a colour profile that attempts to reproduce the colours that can...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Yep, you're quite right about reflective material! given the fluorescent lighting, glare was something I'm concerned about. I'd asked Graeme about it; his response was that it's best to use a colour target that best resembles the kind of things you're scanning. Given that I'm not usually scanning gl...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS
Now that I have a proper camera and a real scanning environment, I've been doing some more testing with Argyll CMS. Here's the latest experiment: This shot was produced on a Bencher Copymate copystand with fluorescent lighting, with a Nikon D800 using the Nikkor 60mm 1:2.8 macro lens. Let me first s...

Re: New OS X Post-processing Software
This looks great! I'm going to give it a try. One thing I'd find useful is colour correction. Using the open-source Argyll-CMS tool, it would be possible to photograph a colour chart with each of the left and right cameras, then automatically apply it to all pages uniformly. See my thread on it here...
