Re: Announcing the Archivist Quill

Thanks again. I am asking about cameras because I didn't yet realize if the quality of shots (Canon PS A1400) depends on zoom factor. I made a series of test shots and found no quality issues with sharpness, noise and barrel when zooming up to 50%-60% of its 5x range. And since every pixel counts, h...

Re: Announcing the Archivist Quill

Hi Jonathon,

Your design is truly great! A few questions if you don't mind:

how thick are the aluminium profiles that you use?

what is the distance from each camera to the semi-platen it captures?

do you use zoom on cameras?

are focusing and zooming set via CHDK?

Thanks and regards,
Anton

Re: Scanning postcards?

i've got a small collection of old postcards and i tried both shooting them with Canon EOS DSLR and scanning with an office-grade HP SJ. Shooting may be fast BUT provided that your cards are perfectly flat (not curved) and perfectly lit (ideally by two LED laps at 45 degrees to the plane being scann...

Re: Off-the-Shelf Simplicity

I would suggest you to browse through the scanners gallery of our community, where you can find very simple and effective setups. A second GH2 - for $1400 - is out of the question, so this will be a one-camera setup. for some $200-$300 you can have two units of Canon A590 and save your Panasonic onl...

Re: Sa30gr scanner build

Wow, that looks robust and very functional ! Some questions if you don't mind: Q1. Is the book cradle set on the furniture rails to slide left and right ? Q2. What kind of lighting do you use and did you have an issue with uneven light causing white or black areas after 'kromsating' the colour/grays...

Re: Post-it note page turner experiment

why shouldn't it? Mechanically page turning indoors is not a heavy duty action, and the whole thing looks repairable at home what it needs extra is a suction fan or post-it paper to capture one upper page. And also something that will keep the books with tight bindings open all the time when platen ...

Re: Post-it note page turner experiment

Folks, if this were given a post-it paper, it would turn thousands of pages in its own %)

Of course it's too expensive, but without excessive features it could cost ~twice as less, what would be OK for 'hi-end' DIY projects...

Re: Possible Treventus-type scanner?

try mounting two wide LIDE sensors in the plunging head movement, angled slightly. Then the rest of the design would be something like building two flatbed scanners or contact image scanners in parallel, with two separate data paths (one for each facing page), but on a common arm movement Then the ...

Re: "Gable" - single-camera, 'upside-down' scanner - plannin

Happy to see that number of face-down-scanning adepts is growing (just browsed through spamsickle's new design too ;). Your drawings look very solid and promising, good luck with building the scanner! Never thought that a good quality text page image could be recovered when scanned at 45 degrees to ...

Re: Oh, crap -- this is really bad (net neutrality)

Well there is actually a commercial/technological reason behind limiting traffic. Unlike user's desires to watch online broadcasts and to download HD-video via torrents the air bandwidth is not unlimited. Carriers would rather allow extra calls or low-volume data sessions limiting huge downloads tha...
