Re: What is the best ADF scanner?
I cannot say what the best is, but I've picked up a couple of used Fujitsu fi-5120c models from my local government surplus outlet, and they work great! The images are very good, they are fast, and do both sides simultaneously. The prices were great too: $25-$30 each! About 10% of the price of a new...

Re: Edge detection microfilm
Imagemagick has a few edge-detector operators. It's command-line (among other things). I like the Canny edge-detector.
Typical usage:
convert SOURCE-IMAGE -canny 5x5 OUTPUT-IMAGE

Re: Canon A490 (A495) based scanner
I bought two power adapters for my powershow A490 and A495. That was a few years ago. The part number on them is:
CA-PS200
CA-PS800
Yes, both appear on the adapter.
Output is 3.15V DC.
Never had a problem with them.

Re: How much processing for the book covers?
For some of my scans, I've done quite a bit of work fixing up the covers. Sometimes, I use Inkscape (open-source vector graphics tool), put the scanned (camera) image into a layer, and then create layers in front of that for the text, the background-color, and artwork. Then I retouch each of those i...

Re: ideas on ST Picture Zone handling in mixed mode
Hi dtic, I think your suggestions are good! And I didn't know one could delete the default picture zone. That always annoyed me to no end. So thanks for pointing that out! I use about the same workflow, starting off with everything in B/W mode and then changing to mixed-mode on pages as needed. I re...

I too want to chime in and express my thanks, Richard, for all your posts. Very informative, and if I ever get around to working with this area on my own, I will study your posts again!

Re: The best way to shot and download pictures to computer
If you're using chdkptp, here are a few examples to help you; I find the documentation for chdkptp sort of scattered. First, connect your cameras to your computer and find their IDs: chdkptp -elist Next, using the unique parts of each camera's IDs, you can download all the pictures on the camera at ...

Re: Camera Triggering
I've been using a motion-detection trigger for my book scanner, and it works quite well. The way it works is that it first focuses the camera(s) and then begins the motion/no-motion state-machine. This state-machine loop waits for motion (lifting the platen, changing the page) and then waits for a p...

Re: Minimum Camera for Book Scanning
Is this camera canon a495 a good one for building a bookscanner? I recently got an A490 and it works fine for book scanning. The A495 is pretty similar; I'll know for sure when the one I ordered arrives. It's the same 10 MP, supported by CHDK, so I'm hoping it will work well as my second camera. I ...
