Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner

In the case of the Sony W570 it's about 3 seconds in a static situation, but for some reason if your subject is moving that seems to increase. Fortunately the 570 isn't a candidate since it has no USB connection, but the A2200 was particularly cited as slow by CNET, excerpt below: "Like most ca...

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner

One of the things I have noticed about all these small point-and-shoot cameras is that they are slow to respond, and even slower to return to the "ready" state. The CNET review of the Canon A2200 says the same thing ... slow. (and basic) I have the Sony W570 which is a 16MP and takes good ...

Re: Looking to Hire a Builder (SC/NC/GA area)

If you are still interested, I may be able to help you with scanner like the one on the homepage of diybookscanner.org. I have cut and built it in the process of starting work on an evolution of the design using 3D software. Currently it needs the two sheets of glass, the triggering hardware and the...

A build of the standard, plus some evolution

I introduced myself in the appropriate place, now to discuss the build. We cut the standard DIYBookScanner design, but reworking the toolpaths as Vcarve Pro seems to not be able to use toolpaths which use a different tool library. I don’t fully understand that, but it wasn’t a big deal. Scanner Asse...

Re: hi, does any book scanner DIYer want to sell his scanner

What level of "completeness" do you want? Shipping a scanner fully assembled will be expensive and I doubt it will survive the trip undamaged.
Conversely, if sent packed flat it is likely to travel well.

Limitation in Canon API/SDK for EOS series cameras

The Canon API/SDK for the EOS series has the ultimate drawback ... you can only connect ONE camera at a time. This is a very clearly stated limitation in the source code samples, and is not circumventable except by having two PCS. I registered for this API for the explicit purpose of trying to write...

Hello from Switzerland

Hi, I am normally resident in Raleigh, NC, but on temporary assignment in Lausanne Switzerland. I am a retired IBM software engineer and have worked with IBM customers in the old days when IBM was big into CAD/CAM, and attended a lot of classes then myself. I also run an online book collection at ht...

Re: PDF to text recommendations ?

I use Nuance Omnipage 17 to scan documents for my collection http://www.ibiblio.org/britishraj -- most of which come from from Archive.org. Omnipage isn't perfect and it is very slow unless you have a fast multi-core PC. I have used it for more than 10 years and am used to its "quirks". It...
