Re: Low cost Chinese scanners
I say stay away. Picture quality is horrible for our purpose. Think high end "surveillance camera". And it only works through the supplied software as far as I could see, which was some clunky and limited software. And I got a really high scanner with better specificationshttps://www.bangg...

I will suggest a Canon G10. It's old, but can be easely found on ebay. You you don't need more pixels than it has for book pages and OCR. It's the newest and best compact that can be tethered og give a live vewfinder on a Windows PC through PSRemote or some free software found on Canons site.

Re: PVC pipe scanner with 100 degree platen
I will just mention that by using rather extremely slow shutter speeds, like four tenths of a second, one can get pictures using much less light
, and as a side effect, much less reflections. And perhaps combine that with a rather big aperture and rather high ISO. I'm using Canon G10 and PSRemote.

Re: Please recommend paper cutter
I doubt the heavy duty cutters are as bad as you think. It's easy to focus to much on negative reviews and there are alway people that love to complain. How can the makers sell any if they are so bad? Blades to dull, but can be sharpened up agin. Not much about "destructive" scanning on th...

Re: Cutter
I'm currently using a small scissor with extreme cutting power, something similar to this https://www.amazon.com/Joyce-Chen-51-0620-Unlimited-Scissor/dp/B000684DUO/ref=sr_1_30?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1482169174&sr=1-30&keywords=scissors#Ask It is probably better than what you u...

Look at Tools-Options--Read --Detect structural elemens and make sure that 'Headers and footers' is not ticked. I think it is ticked by default.

Re: ABBYY...is anybody using it?
Well, I upgraded to ver 12 from ver 7 some time ago and agree it is a bit unstable. It was fine but a bit slow on an older Vista machine. But on my current 8.1 machine I have had a couple of issues. At one point the program couldn't find the "language file" so I couldn't do anything and ha...

Re: Brand new to making an ebook and need help
After extracting a jpg from the pdf and rotating, and cropping a little I end up with a 459x758 (0.35MB) file and that's way way to small for OCR. It is still possible to obtain a half-decent result from such a small picture, but that means you have to open it in a photo editor, enlarge it 500% and ...

Re: Getting Abbyy to Recognize Chapters/Divisions
Well, when I saved in Abbyy ver 7, I choose "text and pictures only" in "Formats Settings". "Pictures" means pictures on the page, not the whole picture of the page. There's is other options , "pictures only" or pictures over or under the text which preserves ...

Re: Getting Abbyy to Recognize Chapters/Divisions
Are you saving directly to mobi or epub in Abbyy? I use ver 7 and it can't, but probably the newest ver 11 can. Anyhow, if it cannot do a proper job of it, that's just to bad. I save to pdf and open that in Caliber. It doesn't cause any problems so you could try that.
