I tried raising the light, but it only made a very minor difference, because ultimately it gets obscured by the walls of the light mounting.
Would making the lightsource diffuse make any difference? It was one suggestion I received.

Success!! Almost, but camera angle slightly off
Tonight I installed the LED 10W lighting, tested the second camera on CHDK with a cable trigger, and cabletied the trigger button to the scanner. Everything works just peachy... except that the angle of the cameras is slightly off. Probably one degree off so that it cuts off about 1cm above the base...
