Re: crowdsourced transcription instead of OCR
Oh duh I guess I could have actually done a google search before posting. Thanks for letting me know! I looked at their website and FAQ but it was unclear to me-- can you contribute a handwritten text? The Smithsonian site is primarily handwritten texts.

crowdsourced transcription instead of OCR
Saw an article in the New York Times pointing to the Smithsonian Transcription Center last week: https://transcription.si.edu/ I got an account and transcribed a few pages myself. It is a really slick system. It was also surprising to me how difficult it is to read these old long-hand pages now that...

Re: Camera dual triggering
I also had the same problem as JCKirk-- the cameras would act like they were getting ready to take a picture when I pressed my trigger, but never actually would. I found the answer in another thread and thought I'd post it here for posterity. You have to enable remotes in the chdk menu before it wil...

Re: Oversized davidlandin Model
Cameras: We've looked at the matrix and read the most recent comments about refurbished Canon A810, A2200, A2400IS, etc. One question we have is, can any or all of these be controlled by remote control? I'm just in the process of building mine too. I'll chip in what I have gathered so far, but I'm ...

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner
I decided to go ahead with the A810. I bought two refurbished from Canon for $59.99 a piece (plus tax and shipping). They come with a year warranty. It looks like I could have bought a used on one off ebay cheaper but decided I didn't want to wait and didn't want to roll the dice on a used one. I de...

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner
I’m trying to decide on cameras for the hackerspace build. I read through the camera guide spreadsheet and other threads. I’m looking at refurbished Canon Powershots and compared the A810, A2300, A2400IS, A3400 and A4000IS. They no longer have the A2200 for sale from Canon. It is on amazon but $100 ...

Re: A DIY Book Scanner In Every Hackerspace /DIY Kit
I've been wanting one of the kits for a while. I went to buy one this week now that I have the money and I see they are sold out. Any estimate when (if) another batch will be available for purchase?
