Will increased megapixels improve OCR?

I guess my question is more of a, "how does the software recognize the characters?" I kind of assumed it looked for blotches of contrast-colored pixels that resemble characters of a given language.... But is it looking at the whole image and recognizing characters, i.e. "reading" the page like a hu...

Re: Footsie Bookscanner

Thanks for taking the time to show the photos of the book holder. In builds where the platen drops into the book, the cradle typically adjusts to accomodate the width of the book. Is this not necessary in this case? I envision the book coming up to the platen and finding the groove into the gutter p...

Re: Footsie Bookscanner

Quick question about the book support: In the instructables tutorial is looks like a simple hinge connecting two pieces of plywood. I was thinking that wouldn't allow much room for thicker books like textbooks, bibles, etc. Then in this thread I saw what looks kind of like a hammock between the two ...

Re: PVC Tubing Cube (new version)

Thank you very much for getting back to me. One additional question... How does the platen lift? It seems to me like the horizontally oriented T's connecting the crossbar to the vertical pipes swivel right where they connect to the vertically oriented T's. I'm trying to envision how this would work...

Best way to get most accurate Split Page step?

Hey there! So I am building my own scanner, planning to use a set-up similar to David Landin's. Book open between two 45º blocks, a 90º platen that lowers into the book, flattening both pages at once. However, this set-up will have one camera (a 13 MP smartphone) attached to a crossbar rather than ...

Re: PVC Tubing Cube (new version)

Hey there, Nice build! Thanks for sharing! I am coming in the process of coming up with plans for my own, probably a cross between yours and David Landin's designs. May I ask, what are the PVC rings that attach the hinges to the PVC called? Here's what I mean... DSC_0035.jpg And why are the hinges ...

Re: Getting OCR + Uniform Lettering without the corrections

Here are a couple examples. The first attachment is of a paragraph after seaching for "grounding" after first running the "ClearScan equivalent" OCR. after OCR.jpg (Edit: I realize the search term is in fact "ground" in the image. But I've gone back and checked, searching for the term "grounding" yi...

Getting OCR + Uniform Lettering without the corrections?

Hey everybody, First of all, I owe the site and the contributors to free software a huge thank you (and definitely a donation if I can figure out how to work out some kinks). I finished my first scan about a week ago using a basic camera/tripod-aimed-at-an-angled-wedge-with-piece-of-glass-over-each-...
