After many attempts with Acrobat Pro, Abbyfinereader, Scan Taylor I usually ended up with massive pdfs thanks to embedded images and OCR mapped to embedded character images, not being mapped to the 6 fonts which are already embedded (for free) in any pdf file. I used to use something like your steps with Acrobat Pro and ClearType - trouble is it simply embedded all the nonmapping text into the pdf. I found the output was simply not good enough and the pdfs I made where just huge 50mbs or over. I tried all sorts to optimise the filesize but it didnt fall m...

Sounds like the resolution is not good enough.

You will have to OCR it to get it print quality - I recommend Omnipage
