ted talk: diy hardware as a "starter kit for civilization"

I thought folks on this list might be interested in a heart-warming 4-minute TED talk by a fusion-energy physicist-turned-farmer describing a very DIY Book Scanner -like effort to open-source design what he identified as the 50 machines needed to run a civilization. Spoiler fact: his community has d...

Re: Could I ask for a book?

Russia now has the right to browse through your hard drives in the airport No surprise there, as Russia is a thinly masked dictatorship. Amazingly, the same is true here in the United States, so long as the travel involved is return from a trip abroad. Check out this post by Glenn Greenwald at Salon.

Re: Let's Make A DIY Book Scanner Test Chart

Just tickling this topic. To summarize the discussion so far: The test page discussed here is intended to measure the image produced by a scanner setup. It is not intended to post-processing setups, a worthy goal that could be the subject of another topic. The test page discussed here should be desi...

Re: Acrobat Tips

i'm surprised to hear all these reports - i have ocr'd hundreds of books in Acrobat, many with 300+ images of two pages, the last hundred or so books with all scans in grayscale (which could potentially give rise to umpausewhat's neighboring-letter issue), and never experienced anything more than a ...

Re: Linear slides for high load

From what I could see those seem awfully high priced, with too-small travels for even regular scanners, much less your larger one. Your keyboard drawer slides could simply be too weak -- keyboard drawers are intended to hold up the tiny floor of the keyboard drawer and a plastic keyboard, total of a...

Re: Paragraph issues

Presumably this is the Abbyy program translating the end of each line on the page as a "hard return," that is, the same as the end of a paragraph, rather than the "soft return" that word processors use to wrap lines that have reached the margin. Soft returns automatically move as...

Re: HOW TO COMPRESS PDF FILES

What is the average size of the PDF file of the books scanned by you? My scanned a book of 700 pages is around 90 to 100 megas. Would decrease it? The following draws on flatbed experience but might help with camera-based scanning. The software that comes with my scanner permits a choice of several...

Re: Let's talk about Lighting

What about these Cree R5s ? A DX commenter says they put out a maximum 440 lumens at 1.4 amps, vs. what I understand to be the maximum 228 lumens at 1.0 amps for the Q5s Daniel seems to be using (judging from photos earlier in this thread), at a cost of only a $1.65 more apiece. Would that mean that...

canon powershot A480s refurbished, $73 at best buy

Red and blue are available and shipping and tax raise the total for two to $173. Pickup at local Best Buys was not available - that option must apply only to stocked items. This camera model is on the CHDK list and the SDM list . See the glossary thread in the Hardware forum if you are not familiar ...

Re: Let's Make A DIY Book Scanner Test Chart

About the DPI, the pdf you uploaded doesn't seem big enough to be 600 dpi images True, but isn't that the idea behind compressed formats -- they store much smaller than they present? The source images were originally in jpeg format, which is a compressed format. The b&w image was a 1.1MB jpeg, ...
