I use a piece of foam that came with some packaging and then some weights on top of the foam. I find that the normal cover does not press the sheet of paper down adequately enough for best results. He is referring to a feed roller. These are plentiful on eBay. I recommend a small air compressor to blow into the spine before the page turning process. Yes the part you are writing about is solely to hold the platen together. People use black to reduce glare and reflections.

Turtle91 I'm not sure how I could get 17-18 volts out of the 12V power supply. Is it possible to combine the 2 rails (12V + 5V) like you could if you put 2 batteries in series??
