Re: Ionaudio Booksaver?

If that JPG is what the camera produces then I think, honestly, that the cameras in the current Ion Booksaver will never generate satisfactory results. One can tinker with lighting and angle and glass, but in the end the resolution is much too low and based on the sample images I think the sensor an...

Re: Another android camera may be coming

Rob, I think what you are talking about is already seen (at least some of it) in the camera-to-pdf kinds of apps such as these:

Re: Bitonal conversion using Photoshop (Gimp & Imagemagic...

Ok, mad crazy kudos and thanks for the batch GIMP processor. I am playing with it now and the results took some tinkering but look excellent. While this additional step may not make into my mundane daily use cycle, for important material for public consumption, this improves my output quality greatl...

Re: Camera and full electrics for $225

Thanks, Daniel. It was from lots of time on these boards looking at what others had done and a relatively tight budget for the electrics that led me to this solution. Those little RCA DVD players were sold in pairs and are made to be put on the back of a car seat and linked together to share video. ...

Camera and full electrics for $225

Just a quick note on the electrics for my build -- this is more to get people thinking about ideas for their own builds and not a model to follow precisely. 2x Powershot a480 cameras off ebay: $85 shipped (ymmv) 2x 4gb class 4 SDHC cards $12 shipped (Amazon) 2x AC adapters for cameras: ABC Products®...

Re: Dr. Cheap's software & workflow

A couple quick notes on process. I have found that for basic B&W text, the JPG files work fine and save me a step. For nice archiving, I will still use the CR2 raw files, but for simple text, I have switched to JPG. I can also mostly process clean simple text with left and right pages together, whic...

Re: Dr. Cheap's software & workflow

I'm using the a beta version of the standard scanner kit with two A480 cameras running CHDK. I'm using a 2-camera 4.5v battery-powered USB trigger made by Frans van de Kamp. Mine is similar to this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fvdk3d/4755398692/in/set-72157624151791739/ I have them set to shoot...

Dr. Cheap's software & workflow

Since the scanner has been up and running, I have been playing about with software options and Daniel asked if I would post some details on my processing and workflow. The following is the suite of software I am using at the moment: CR2 Converter : Freeware. Batch-converts CR2 to TIFF. Quick, super-...

Re: Portable Build Lighting Question

Thanks, I will see what I can muster. I'm using cheapo A480s with CHDK, but there is a little odd focus behavior in programmable mode. When in AUTO mode the focus will find the text on the page and set that as the focal area -- all good. When in programmable mode, no matter how I set the focus mode ...

Re: Portable Build Lighting Question

I tripled the amount of light coming in and am getting MUCH better results now. Nearly perfect OCR and my final PDFs are gorgeous.

I'll try to post a copyright-free sample soon(tm) along with pics of the rig.
