Re: DIY Desktop CNC Machine

Wendel, What would you anticipate using a desk top CNC machine to make? Pinewood derby cars! With a desk top CNC machine, I'd build perfect replicas of the gullwing Mercedes and the Bugatti Veyron. I also spent several evenings with a Dremel tool making a Kindle case by hollowing out two pieces of ...

Re: Sawing off book gutters for sheet fed scanning

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! MY EYES!!! THEY BURN!!! :( Why, dear gawd, why?!!! It makes me sad inside to see a book eviscerated so. Please, please, please.... build one of the second generation book scanners and stop the murder. ;) A woman in our church died leaving a bookshelf full of Reader's D...

Re: Sawing off book gutters for sheet fed scanning

Is a circular saw the "right tool"? Has anyone tried this trick with a Dremel multi-max or a saber saw?

Re: Let's talk about Lighting

Yaknow, Dan, if you don't have fun manufacturing LED lighting packs, maybe you could "license" the design to someone else with more time than cash to build/sell.

Re: Let's talk about Lighting

You know, Dan, you made and sold a number of little electronic triggers for the cameras. If that was profitable/pleasant for you, you could do the same with LED lighting assemblies. If you put together an LED assembly to replace my 1.21 gigawatt halogen lamps I'd buy it (and find another way to heat...

Be sure to tape some gun-shaped outlines in lead foil to the flat parts for the TSA guys' entertainment when you take it through airport security.

You wouldn't want them to think you'd do something unlawful like ignore a copyright.

Re: E-reader smackdown: Can they read Google Books PDFs?

I'm probably just being obtuse, but I believe PDF and e-readers cannot coexist. If I were 30 years younger, I might think otherwise. My Sony and my Kindle DX can both display PDFs very well, provided they scale the page to the dimensions of the display. However, the letters are too small for my midd...

Re: A task for volunteers: handling out of memory situations

Have you considered an observer pattern? Exception-throwing threads can send bad news to someplace special. The someone in another thread who is expecting something from its exception-throwing threads can either register for notifications, or poll the bad news repository on a timeout. We should use...

Re: A task for volunteers: handling out of memory situations

2. When an out-of-memory situation happens inside the QImage class (part of Qt), it doesn't throw an exception, instead turning the image into a null image. That's very mean if you ask me. This means we would need to insert explicit checks every time we construct a QImage. That's currently done in ...

Re: E-reader smackdown: Can they read Google Books PDFs?

I found this article very interesting, basically it shows what I already knew: all e-readers SUCK. http://mikecanex.wordpress.com/2010/11/24/google-books-pdf-smackdown-nookcolor-vs-samsung-galaxy-tab-vs-ipad/ I am still waiting for the Notion Ink Adam, I hope they do it right. I'm inclined to offer...
