Re: 0.9.10 release

Calmadigital: "Use other software" probably isn't the most helpful answer, but it's the best I can personally do. If you use Homebrew with Lion, you can install Scan Tailor much faster and easier. While it also compiles most things from source, it distributes precompiled Qt and other libra...

Re: Add hidden text layer from different pdf files

This is tricky to do with free software, but it can be done. PDFBeads can make tiny PDFs with OCR text layers. One of the problems with making PDFs is that compressed images in greyscale or colour are huge - very huge. It's very difficult to get them down to an acceptable size. That's why many peopl...

Mac users: jbig2enc is now in Homebrew! (Make better PDFs)

Good news for Mac users interested in making PDFs! jbig2enc just got added to Homebrew , the best way to install open source software in Mac OS X. jbig2enc is an open source tool that allows you to make very small PDFs from pages you've processed in Scan Tailor, a fraction of the size of what you ca...

I didn't read in detail, but it appears to work - certainly it does USB triggering.

Re: Book Scanner webiste

I notice that most of them have built-in 5mp cameras - only the high-end model uses external cameras (DSLRs, like Atiz). I'd be curious (and wary) of the image quality, but it might be enough for some people.

Re: Outline of software to use

If you're looking for DjVu, Strider's software and workflow is your best bet. If you need PDF (for instance, to use on e-book readers that only do PDF), PDFBeads is your best option right now: http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=683 It's a little tricky to get working on Windows,...

Re: PDFBeads — Convert Scanned Images to a Single PDF File

While I don't know for sure, my guess would be that Preview probably recompressed the pages and did something much less efficient than PDFBeads. Having to use Acrobat would kind of suck, so I'd suggest looking for 3rd party PDF tools that let you add annotations without the bloat. There must be some...

Re: PDFBeads — Convert Scanned Images to a Single PDF File

I'm looking for an open source, free or cheapware way to do this, so I can appreciate the importance of this program, but I have to say, I don't really get how this is done. I downloaded and installed most of the programs (I think), but not being familiar with Ruby and being on a windows machine, I...

Re: 0.9.10 release

Thanks, Tulon!

I've updated the formula in Homebrew. Any Mac users with Homebrew can install it by typing

Code: Select all

brew install scantailor
Apologies for the delay - I was on vacation when 0.9.10 was released.
