Re: The best way to shot and download pictures to computer
I have two Canon A810 cameras. I have managed using CHDK remote triggering on them. I would like to know simple way how to download pictures to computer without removing SD cards. If you're using CHDK's USB-based remote triggering, you also have to turn that off before USB-based downloading will wo...

Re: Xcanex book scanner
To get to 600 dpi, you would need a 32MP camera, which I don't see available anywhere among the cheaper point and shoot cameras. The optics aren't usually that great either in such cheap cameras, and the book doesn't seem to be placed optimally with respect to it, so I doubt that you would get very...

Amazon Cyber Monday 2013 camera deals
FYI, of the eight most-megapixel Canon cameras on sale on Amazon today, only the wide-angle 16MP ELPH 130 IS has any CHDK support at all (alpha). All the rest are lower MP or are unsupported.

Re: Dual Cameras on Kit with Canon + CHDK
We used stock USB 5V power adapters, plugged into a power strip, to trigger the cameras, instead of wiring anything custom. We'd just flip the power switch on and off. Pull the handle down. http://atxhackerspace.org/images/c/ce/Bookscanner_lever_down.jpg Turn the power strip on to focus. http://atxh...

Re: Raspberry Pi + LCD + footswitch
The Austin Hackerspace scanner is back online, with a Raspberry Pi controlling the cameras. The script is heavily modified from Ben's original. http://atxhackerspace.org/wiki/Book_Scanner is updated with instructions on its use. In short, it's an off-the-shelf Raspberry Pi, HDMI monitor, USB keyboar...

Notes from University of Texas Library's preservation dept
Toured the digitization portion of the preservation department at the University of Texas at Austin today, on the first floor of the Perry-Castañeda Library. Some of their best practices are interesting, because I figured the amateur stuff was a little behind the curve. First and foremost, books, lo...

Re: trying to recreate the foamboard scanner - my first buil
Maybe a bit of google searching will turn up a glass company here in my area that can help out. Glass drill bits are a thing; you can drill holes in glass, or I'm sure someone at a glass place could do it. But I wonder if you couldn't just use some extra binder clips. Clip four of them to each pane...

Re: trying to recreate the foamboard scanner - my first buil
Should I be using the stuff that's thicker (1/8"?) and firmer or since this is mounted on foam board, should I be using that really thin, flexible stuff they had on hand? Unfortunately, there wasn't anyone wearing a red vest around in that area, so I wasn't able to pose the question to Lowes' ...

Re: Scanning 5x7 Index Cards - Help?!
Yes, given the quantity, it seems like even burning out a few document scanners like the Doxie, or the Canon P215 (if there's content on both sides) is the smartest way to go. That said, if you have more time than money, I don't think you need a "book scanner" at all, you just need a copy ...

Re: Most effective ways to reduce glare and unwanted reflect
My Canon point and shoot A495 cameras have a manual focus lock using the out of the box firmware Ahh, it's called an "auto focus lock" on this one, assuming this online manual is correct: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/275697/Canon-Powershot-A2200.html?page=96 I wonder if it stays prese...
