Re: How to crop and deskew pages using only free software?
Scan Tailor Advanced has the 'crop' function. After 'Splitting' and 'Deskew' stages there is 'Page Box' in select content. There is rectangular selection (orange lines) that should cover the cropped area. You should apply 'Page Box' manual mode and 'Content Box' auto. Apply it separately to even and...

Hi Brandon,
Many thanks for sharing effects of your work with all. I'm convinced that not only me but many other people keep fingers crossed for implementation of something similar to Adobe ClearScan.
Cheers.

Hello Brandon,
Effects of binarization presented in form of two screenshots at your Github repository are really impressive. Do you have plans to add some interface to your algorithm for users that want to use it as standalone program?

Re: How to convert a book to serchable pdf using open source software
I have a question though: is it possible to somehow correct OCR output from Tesseract other than editing the pdf in Acrobat (I don't feel like paying monthly for that)? I've been trying to do OCR with gImageReader on Linux. It uses Tesseract and you can preview txt file, but to actually correct it,...

Re: pdfbeads on Ubuntu 18.10
Hmm, don't think it's this that is the cause - Ubuntu package for ImageMagick has never had jpeg2000 in my memory and pdfbeads has been falling back to JPEG quite happily for years (iunluding in at least but not limited to 18.04, 17.10, 17.04 and 16.04). The hard crash is new in Ubuntu 18.10. There...

Re: pdfbeads on Ubuntu 18.10
Another version of Ubuntu, another breakage in PDFbeads and dependencies. The standard ImageMagick version in Ubuntu’s repositories doesn’t support jpeg2000 compression. You need to compile newer version of ImageMagick to have this (it may be tricky as there are other dependencies that need to be r...

I also started from similar cardbord prototype and acrylic glass in order to test how it may work for me. Further to your description my thoughts are following: 1. Even lighting is very difficult to obtain in this kind of device. You may try to reduce it by: a. more square shape of the glass in orde...

Re: How to convert a book to serchable pdf using open source software
I performed small comparison of the free method with Adobe Acrobat (Pro DC 15) output. It was much more tricky that I had expected. The comparison is based on the same book I previously scanned and processed. This is what I obtained: 1. Speed _____________ Adobe Acrobat ____ Open software Combining ...
