Re: New Sony Readers to take on Amazon Kindle

In a more perfect world, we'd all be able to sign up for time on a DIY book scanner at a neighborhood co-op or something. Yes! I have often thought of this as a possibility -- community, dormitory, or rental units available. My only question here is... how to you disavow any liability with respect ...

Re: New Sony Readers to take on Amazon Kindle

I myself am hoping to use my bookscanner in tandem with the upcoming Plastic Logic reader, assuming it's going to be good. It's mostly for my academic work in medieval theology... Are you aware of the Christian Classics Ethereal Library (ccel.org)? It's hosted by Calvin College, across the street f...

Do you know what format files these devices take? I've been favoring ePub, MOBI and PDF when I don't have text. Calibre does a good job of format conversion for the most part.

Re: New Sony Readers to take on Amazon Kindle

I own both the SONY PRS-505 and the Amazon Kindle DX. I find that most books that I want to read are not offered by either of these vendors. What's maddening is that I've found half of Dorothy Sayers' murder mysteries available free, and also for sale by Amazon, but the other half (those which were ...

Re: My 3rd Generation Scanner Build Thread

It's all a function of how much stress you can put on the skin. airplanes, race cars, stick-frame houses they all get stiffness and light weight by loading a frame that tensions a skin. If you had infinite stress on an ideal membrane, it'd be stiffer than a pane of glass. And you can get the materia...

Re: Brainstorming about portable book scanners.

Sorry if I'm a pest with all these ideas. Has anyone suggested beating the vibration issue by holding all the things fixed: glass, lights, cameras and then lifting the book against the glass? Not manually (tired arms) but mechanically. Use pulleys and sash weights to lift the book and its support in...

Hey, is it cheating to buy teflon sheets from Small Parts, Inc.? I used to get teflon from them back during my telescope building days.

Googling found this. http://www.smallparts.com/s?searchNodeI ... ion=submit

Re: My 3rd Generation Scanner Build Thread

Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this, and apologies if it is the stupidest thing you've heard today. But I got the impression that the problem of racking is caused by the weight of the glass (or plexiglass) in the thang you're pressing against the book. Can you replace this rigid transpa...

Re: Kindle DRM rears its ugly head.

I spent the evening figuring out how one goes about removing DRM from a Kindle file so that I could put it onto my SONY Reader. I don't think I'll rest easy until I've got all my books (including the paper ones all around my house) on a CD-ROM in an open format. I prefer the Kindle DX hardware and I...

World hunger and nuclear fusion? You guys are all right by me.

I'm an engineer who likes to read. I've got a SONY and a Kindle DX. And a basement full of books I'd like to scan. So, I'm watching this project with interest. I've already gotten a lot of great info from you all. Thank you very much.
