Re: PVC pipe scanner with 100 degree platen

It has to be angled downward due to there simply being no space behind it before hitting the wall (you can see that in the picture in the previous post - there's a matter of only a few inches' wiggle room), so it will have extra weight attached to it. I still don't understand why the arms need to t...

Re: PVC pipe scanner with 100 degree platen

The PVC/wood combining I was asking about turns out to be the PVC pipes of the bottom frame resting on wood supports, and he's planning on drilling down through the PVC pipe and just screwing them into the wood. That'll work. You could also put an inline PVC 'T' fitting there (with the leg of the T...

Re: a small story for my scanner

If you want to see reflections, put black paper under the platen, leave the lights ON, then photograph the black paper. I'm not sure what photographing book pages with the lights OFF shows, other than light contributions to your images from light sources other than the scanner's light.

Re: Lighting for PVC pipe scanner

The Viltrox light's housing has a threaded 1/4-20 hole on the bottom edge (this is the same thing that most cameras have to mount to a tripod). I don't know why you'd use a hot shoe mount with this light unless you're going to mount it on the hot shoe of a camera. I'm unaware of how Landin mounted t...

Re: LED lamps 'Warm' or 'Cold' light - Does it matter?

I'd strongly encourage anyone that is worried about the color temperature of lights affecting their photographed pages to use a camera that supports custom white balance control instead of a smartphone (although it's possible that some of the camera apps on newer phones may also support this feature...

Re: Lighting for PVC pipe scanner

...it could also be the case that dpc with probably greater experience examined the light produced more closely. Here's a simple experiment that may help to explain things... If you put your camera in the bottom of the platen 'v' and pointed it straight up to photograph the light source above, what...

Re: Lighting for PVC pipe scanner

Sorry, I've never used smartphones for any sort of document photography so I can't comment on their capabilities. Others that have posted in these forums have though. You might want to search through the posts to see if there's anything useful.

Re: Lighting for PVC pipe scanner

Those LED flood lights put out a lot of light, but are heavy and generate an inordinate amount of heat. They are also wider than some other lights and that requires the light to be mounted higher to prevent it from being reflected off the platen and into the scanned image. I also found that they had...

Re: Lighting for PVC pipe scanner

I've bought those single-chip floodlights on eBay in the past. I no longer use those though and have moved to lights similar to these.

Re: Archivist Quill Kit Plans vs. Archivist Book Scanner Plans?

I don't know what the reason is behind Landin choosing a 110 degree platen angle over the more common 100 degrees. Perhaps it was a requirement that the cameras needed to be mounted closer to the platen with his plastic tubing arm design and that would require an increased platen angle to prevent a ...
