By the looks of it the optics would be of a inferior quality compared to a traditional digital compact camera. 5 MP is also quite low, something you would have seen 5 years ago. There's a reason that the usual recomendation for DIY bookscanners are 10 MP.

Re: Image magick (or other) program - grey bgnd to white ?

Not being very experienced in photography - how does one identify areas of high noise in a pic ? By looking at it. Really, it's not more complicated than that. For example, here's a bit of one of the images you posted cropped so you'll see at 100% (one pixel of the photo = one pixel on the screen):...

One camera scanner for large books - a simple build

Warning : In the following description I'm going to use metric units and Danish currency. You'll have to do the math yourself if you want other units but I'll help you out a little: 1 cm = 10 mm. 1 cm = 0.3937 inch 1 kr = 0.134 euro. 1 kr = 0.178 us dollar (give and take, changes a bit every day) B...

Re: 16 MP?

I guess you dont have any experience with comic book scanning but I wonder if you think the A810 could be used? I see no reason it couldn't be used but there might be other just as good options. I bought the A810 because I was going to scan some large books (40x30 cm, 16x12 inches) so I need as man...

Re: 16 MP?

Not long ago I bought a Canon PowerShot A810 and having used a little for book scanning I figured I might as well give a little feedback. Back in the days when this topic was created Daniel defined some needs for a camera. I'll quote them with the comments for the A810 in bold. Must haves. 1. Good-e...

Needed DPI - a few thoughts

Note: This might not be posted in the right forum, so please move it if that's the case. Had a bit trouble finding the right place for it. Reading about efforts to improve bitonal output from scanning in http://www.diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=2554 brought me to some interesting...

Re: Have to edit each side manually

This might be one of those cases where a picture is worth a 1000 words. A few photos/screenshots to illustrate the problem might make it more clear where the problem is.

Re: Cable release adapters

There's an alternative that can be used on almost any camera: http://www.bristolcameras.co.uk/p-cable-release-adapter-for-digital-cameras.htm . The same guy who make the one you showed also used to make one that would fit your camera (I think) but I don't think it's made anymore: http://lightdescrip...
