Re: Mac users: jbig2enc is now in Homebrew! (Make better PDF

If you're at the point of running jbig2enc, you should already have processed TIFF files you want to turn into a PDF. If you haven't processed any files with Scan Tailor yet, you should do that first! You can install Scan Tailor in Homebrew by doing brew install scantailor Then run it by typing &quo...

Re: jbig2enc: pdf.py patched for right pdf page size

This patch is also now available in Homebrew for OS X users. If you have Homebrew, you can install it by doing

Code: Select all

brew install jbig2enc
If you already have jbig2enc installed, you can get the patched version by doing:

Code: Select all

brew uninstall jbig2enc && brew install jbig2enc

Re: Canon a590IS ?

"IS" means image stabilization. So the a590IS presumably compensates for camera shake when shooting at "low shutter speeds". For fixed camera positioning, as in book scanning, I doubt that the "IS" would be all that useful particularly if you shoot with a lot of light....

Re: Single camera method.

Like you said, Spamsickle, I think that would be the better way. I've used a single-camera scanner using the book-flip method - I scanned every even page, then flipped the book and scanned every odd page. One of the biggest challenges you'll face is consistent, correct camera positioning, which is c...

Re: Scan Tailor "Enhanced"

Apologies for the delay, but Scan Taulor Enhanced is now in Homebrew. Mac users who use Homebrew as their package manager can install it by doing brew install scantailor --enhanced If you already have the regular version installed, you can try out Enhanced by doing brew upgrade scantailor --enhanced...

Re: Cuneiform OCR

Tesseract is available for Windows in official CLI form: http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/downloads/list There are also unofficial (probably unscriptable) GUIs, but I'm not familiar with those. Cuneiform for Windows is also available, but I don't know if it's the same CLI interface as the Linu...

Re: Scan Tailor "Enhanced"

Hi, Petr,

Is this release stable enough for general use? Is there a git tag I can use to pull the code in this release? If so, I was going to add this as a build option in Homebrew so Mac users can easily try out the development release.

It's been discussed here on the forums. The quality seems iffy from what we know so far, but they're not officially out yet.

Re: Do we actually need portable cameras ?

"Software enhanced" just means that they interpolate the image. It's not true detail. The specifications note that it only captures 1920x1080 - about 2 megapixels. That's plenty good enough for a webcam, just not good enough for us. Which is the problem! There hasn't been a huge market for...
