Re: Heavy Speckling
The specimen tif supplied is b&w 2-colors and although 300dpi, I noticed is either insufficiently defined and/or too over-exposed to capture small typeface print. If possible, the quickest route would seem to be re-scanning in greyscale at a suitable dpi, maybe say, 400, and adjusting the scanne...

Re: What geometric distortions selections to use/choose?
@OP - I haven't read your other posts and don't know how you scanned the image e.g. flatbed or camera, but if it were me, bitter experience would reconfirm the rule: time is most efficiently spent in getting the image quality optimal at the image/acquire stage, and not in trying to achieve too much ...

Re: Lizardtech virtual printer
Has anyone got a link to the MS Windows version of LizardTech Virtual Printer? I'm wondering if it has been 'disappeared' or has changed name as I'm not finding it ...

Re: Best non-DIY book scanners [Plustek; Avision]
1) dead Plustek OpticBook 4800 - thankfully amazon.co.uk took this back and indeed declined my offer of pro-rata reduction of the fully reimbursed price for having used it for 7 months. The scans produced were fine and it operated faster than the 3600 plus you can get much closer to the spine but fo...

Re: Best non-DIY book scanners
Sounds about right - even for b&w text only I've learned it is indeed best to scan in greyscale and to take care first of all adjusting scanner options like brightness, contrast and gamma, especially with faded/yellowed pages, plus of course using a backing card when scanning thin paper with tex...

Re: How 2 brighten / lighten 2 colours (1 BitsPerPixel) image?
Thanks for that. In my experience it's true that fiddling with the scanner controls can often overcome this problem, however in the present case each affected page is a half and half of normal type (faint, under-inked) and emboldened italic letters (which being over-exposed 'merge ' into each other)...

How 2 brighten / lighten 2 colours (1 BitsPerPixel) image?
In the foothills of learning GIMP ably assisted by the local library's now slightly dated ' Beginning GIMP: From Novice to Professional ' by Akkana PECK, I have been unable however to find any means of brightening / lightening a (part) page of a scanned image where (say) the upper half gives the app...

Re: Make a djvu file and add ocr: DjVuToy; TiffDjvuOcr; CuneiDjVu
Thanks for the heads-up @dtic. DjVuToy certainly provided in my testing a good - and fast - standard of ocr as well as DjVu file creation, but I'm hopeful the 'open source' tradition can be continued with it in parallel via TiffDjVuOcr as and when you have the time to update or - if willing - to mak...

Re: Splitting pages produces miniature page images
@L.Willms I have experienced your problem but only rarely - in fact the only case I recall offhand was I think when I dismantled somebody else's pdf which comprised a single first page and then all subsequent pages were landscape/2 pages side by side like open book. I extracted these pages as tiff f...

Re: Make a djvu file and add ocr: DjVuToy; TiffDjvuOcr; CuneiDjVu
Keyboard's wearing out LOL... in the above "discarded the idea a few years ago that ocr text only was impractical for faithful reproduction" obviously = "discarded the idea a few years ago that ocr text-only was practical for faithful reproduction"... Yet another question so far ...
