Re: Sony Alpha A390 - experience?

Very nice! Thanks for the heads up, Abarbour.

Unfortunately, it looks like the A390 doesn't support a wired remote trigger, just an IR one. That could be a dealbreaker.

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS

One more photo. This one also uses a LUT profile with LAB coordinates (-al) along with the -un setting, which a) avoids clipping values whiter than the "white" on the test chart, and b) does not extrapolate colour values outside what the test chart shows. I would have expected the extrapol...

Re: Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS

I just ran another ICC conversion, this time using a LUT profile with LAB coordinates instead of XYZ coordinates (which is what -ax produces). The results are quite superior to the last attempt: it8chart-icc2.jpg Very good colour accuracy without colour cast; definitely a nice improvement. (Unfortun...

Automatic colour calibration using Argyll CMS

I've been looking at options for automatic colour calibration of book scanner images. I don't trust camera's auto colour calibration, or software's white balancing, to really produce a decent colour calibration. So I decided to give the open source colour calibration software Argyll CMS a try. I sta...

Re: PDFBeads 1.0.9 for Windows

By the way, here's how I did it: * I installed Ruby using the Rubyinstaller.org binaries. * I `gem install`ed PDFBeads and its dependencies: rmagick and hpricot. * I also `gem install`ed ocra, the tool that packages up the .exe files. * I navigated to the directory that contains PDFBeads - within yo...

PDFBeads 1.0.9 for Windows

Hi, everyone! I've made an updated Windows version of PDFBeads, using the latest version 1.0.9, which you can download right here . Testers needed! I haven't had the chance to try this out on a computer that doesn't have Ruby installed. Requirements: ImageMagick installer from here: http://rubyforge...

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner

Yeah, the 1100D/T3 is pretty darn good, and being gphoto-triggered is fantastic.

That said, in Canada, the 1100D is about $550 new. For an extra $100 you can get a 600D/T3i, which is 18mp instead of 12mp - not that much more for a big bump in resolution.

jbig2enc 0.28 is out!

jbig2enc finally has a new official release, 0.28! You can grab the source tarball from the Github repository (under Tags). Mac users, I've updated the Homebrew formula to use 0.28.

This new version includes a number of bugfixes, including a very important fix to retain the DPI of input images.

Re: Cameras for the Hackerspace Scanner

I haven't had a chance to add them to the main document yet, but here is the spreadsheet I used when shopping for cameras. I mainly targeted mirrorless/DSLR cameras, in the mid-to-high price range, that could be triggered either by software or using an official remote interface of some kind. There a...
