Tagging along.
This sounds very interesting. After having scanned 695/1021 of my aquarium magazine collection on a flatbed scanner, this will really speed up my archive.

Suggestion to save weight

Internal metal panels in aircraft are riddled with holes large & small, situated so that they keep the weight of the entire structure minimal without compromising strength.
If holes were designed & tested to ensure they don't compromise function of a mass-produced DIY scanner, they could then be manufactured by the same CNC routing as is currently done.
That should save on shipping costs.
