JakeGaisser Scanner: 1x1, 2x4, furniture, glass

Built a scanner? Started to build a scanner? Record your progress here. Doesn't need to be a whole scanner - triggers and other parts are fine. Commercial scanners are fine too.

JakeGaisser Scanner: 1x1, 2x4, furniture, glass

Post by jakegaisser »

Here is my current progress.

Materials used:
old piece of furniture for boards and drawer slides.
2x4 boards.
1x1 boards. (if you use these for your glass platern, offset the groove so you still have room for bolts or screws)
screws, nuts & bolts.
12" x 16" x 1/8" glass ($2.00 per SQ FT at local glass shop)

tools used: table saw, ban saw, drill/drill press, chop saw.
.

The cameras are Canon PowerShot A470. This probably isn't the perfect camera for this but we already had one and were able to buy a second for $20 on ebay.

The glass we are using is two pieces of 1/8" x 12" x 16" glass, we bought it locally from a glass shop for only $2.00 per sq ft.

all of the wood has been free. I was lucky to get the 1x1 maple boards from a friend that does wood working.

If I didn't get the 1x1s then I probably would have ran a 2x4 through the table saw and cut it in half.

I will be using SDM.

The workmanship and material recycling you have going on here looks great. Thanks for taking the time to document your build so heavily... can't wait for more pics. :)

Thanks, the second camera we bought on ebay should be arriving in the mail today. I should have some pictures of a complete or almost complete scanner today.

Could you take some more pics of your cradle, I'm interested in how it works? How does it slide apart and together?

its just sitting there at the moment. nothing special about it.

I looked at your adjustable one: http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtop ... t=10#p2140

and I saw the video of how one side give under pressure of the platern.

I was thinking you could use a solid board attached to the sliders. then set your adjustable cradle ontop of that board, and just fasten one side of the cradle to the board, then the loose part would be setting on a platform and it can just slide across the surface of the board.

I am not sure how clear I made this. I can draw a picture if you like.

Now that is a neat way to handle the drawer slides for the cradle!
