This looks awesome. Seems like a perfect device for scanning magazines in particular. The one big improvement that you might implement is to add a switch for triggering scans instead of relying on the touch screen on the side. Pi Scan supports almost any kind of switch as a scan trigger. Light switches, doorbells, microswitches, momentary switches, etc. Just connect the two switch wires as described here:
http://tenrec.builders/quill/guide/electronics/pedal/
That goes through how to connect an industrial foot pedal, but this works for any kind of switch.
Alternatively, there are USB pedals/buttons you could hook up. Or even just hook up a keyboard and tap the space bar.
Either way, thanks for sharing the video and I'm glad you are making good use of Pi Scan.

Thanks! A switch would definately be an improvement because it is easy to miss the mark on the touchscreen or hit the wrong button when it is on the side like this.

Couldn't you use a switch that is operated automatically when you have raised the magazine tray to the top, would there be any disadvantages to that?
You might look at various types of microswitch, for example.

Re: diy zinescanner arnhem
Tempting but I think it might make things unnecessary complicated.
For example, you don't always want to click the switch when you push the book against the glass. (for example when you refocus the camera)
So that would require another off switch.
You have one hand free anyway here, so it is actually quite comfortable to work with both hands as you scan along.

Re: diy zinescanner arnhem
hello sir ,you have done great work.
you could put the screen and the raspberry on the top of Π in front of your face so you could watch the reviews .
when you have free time upload some captured pages and the design of your project.
what problems do you think you have to face with while you scanning?

Wow, the front loading idea is really cool!
Auto switches were something that came up a lot in the past. The idea was that if you put the cradle down (on a more "traditional" design), you could press the switch with the downward motion. At least in the scanning operations I worked with, most scanning operators strongly preferred a footswitch, because sometimes things don't go right with the page.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
