Everything camera related. Includes triggers, batteries, power supplies, flatbeds and sheet-feeding scanners, too.

Hello pav

Thanks for the link

If I read correctly, there is only the problem of attaching a webcam.
You have these so rebuilding.

Well of course you get the money for a good Canon camera.

So would a digital camera is still the first choice.

Andreas,
I think 'Use webcam as a camera' is a very interesting topic and worthy of continuing.
However, for practical reasons, I think we should continue in the original thread:

http://www.diybookscanner.org/forum/vie ... 88&p=10307

- so that everybody can find the information in one place.

I hope you have found 'my' (translate.google.com) attempt at German language funny. <:-)
With very best regards,
pav

How do I turn on the webcam in my laptop? I have an acer windows7 ( I don't really know, I'm horrible with computers), and I'm pretty sure it has a webcam. I know I sound really stupid, but the little circle in the middle and the top of my computer is a webcam, right? So, how do I get it to work? I really really wanna use it!

You need a program that uses the webcam. So, for example, install Skype on your computer. It will set up the webcam for you. When you start the program and try to make a video call, it will turn the webcam on and show you the video from it.

I have already worked out a way of capturing a frame from webcams using VLC: http://diybookscanner.org/forum/viewtop ... f=3&t=1023

The hard part for me was trying to do it for 2 at once at the press of a single button. Now that I've done that, the hard part for you will be figuring out what VLC sees as your webcam.

I am planning on buying a couple of webcams and testing this process out on Windows and Linux in a couple of weeks once my prototype scanner is ready.

Reece that is an awesome concept. I'm not sure why I didn't see that thread before. If those new web cameras they were being discussed in http://www.diybookscanner.org/forum/vie ... ?f=1&t=988 really have the 5+ true megapixels then this would be a very simple solution to remote triggering and no need at all of transfering the pictures since they are already on the computer!

If we could somehow get scantailor or BSW to have a "watch folder" and they could automatically process the pictures as they were added that would be great. Of course the config of those programs would have to be set for each new book prior to running all of this. With BSW I think that is doable with the barscan codes, etc.

I guess we could carry that thought a little farther...
If the output folder of scantailor/bsw were itself a "watch folder" of a third software program (either OCR or PDF transfer etc.) then the entire process could be easily automated.

Granted, you would need a fairly beefy computer - multiple cores, good cpu speed, with some decent memory - to run all three of those apps simultaneously.

But in all, that would drastically reduce the processing time!! :D

Cheers!

Its not quite as good as I expected. I just bought some webcams and found that the VLC path was a no-go for a couple of reasons. The still capture shots it took were of a single frame and was 640x480. And having two HD streaming video sessions coming via USB was a problem.

Instead I've decided that if I can get something working via the UVC standard then a lot of webcams will 'just work' with the same process.
I have got something working on Linux which works quite well but I won't get around to doing a Windows version for a few weeks at least (I only have 1 Windows machine out of the 6 or 7 I have lying around and it is basically there because I haven't got around to upgrading it yet) as I want to get a working system before spending time enhancing it for others .

I am documenting what I'm doing at http://dspace.org.nz/2011/09/11/bookscanner-project/

The basic idea is that you set up the webcam parameters like manual focus settings, pan, tilt, zoom at the start of the run and then sequentially take an image left, right, wait, left, right, wait etc.
With manual focus settings I am getting a 5 megapixel image in less than a second. With autofocus I have to let the auto-focus do its job for a couple of seconds before taking the picture.

Also a little wrinkle for my particular webcams was that the webcam is only active when the image is being taken and after the image is taken the lens physically goes back to a park position so I had to add in a little something to put the lens back in the correct focus position before taking the next shot.
