A480 are very cheap. They're so cheap I'm afraid they won't last very long... The build quality seems very low. What do you think of A2000 ?

Hmmm... Seems A1100 IS is cheaper than A2000 IS and comes with a 12.1 sensor and a DIGIC IV processor. But no port. At least not yet.

=== Being a user of a single Canon DSLR for book scanning i can share some pros and cons of a DSLR

Pros

1. DSLR is fast. Focusing and shooting takes a fraction of a second.
2. sensor size makes the pix quality better under same conditions (light, shutter settings etc.). This allows again to scan faster, ensure less light.
3. relevant optics reslt in less distortions compared to a pont-and-shoot.
4. canon dslr may be easily operated from pc, download pictures instantly (almost :), triggered with a wired button or an IR remote
5. using just one camera saves time for compiling a book from two sources

what i don't like

1. dslr is heavy. For my face-down scanning it's rather good than bad, but with a 'classic' face-up design camera must be mounted on the very strong stands to avoid shaking.
2. point and shoot cameras usually got DC adapter outlet. Canon dslr need a special battery adapter for that.
3. dslr is expensive to kill it and the lens (autofocus) doing thousands of scans every day. Powershot priced at $100 is perfect for that :)
