I'm new and need some advise on purchasing a camera.
When I first started thinking of a scanning I was thinking of a digital camera that could also be used as a webcam by USB but take pictures using a prepackaged software by clicking a mouse button. While I would use a free program I know to do the mouse clicking automatically while I turned the pages.
The above idea is probably a pipe dream since no one else has done it...
If anyone could tell me what and where to buy a decent camera and why CHDK is so sought after for this, is it just automation???
It would help me a great deal. I'm looking to scan paperbacks not sure if that matters, probably with a stand with 90° degree glass with a bottom facing up camera and a flexible clamped reading lamp.
Example:
Are all series of Canon PowerShot's listed on SX200''', '''A1000''', or '''A590 IS''' what kind of variation is ok if any.
A good retailer Canon website, Walmart, Best Buy, online or in person ect...
What's the pro's and cons of chdk vs SDM or ignoring both and striking out for super cheap.

Are you budget-conscious, or could you buy anything you want? That also influences your choice.

For the camera I was thinking of between $100 to maybe $250 dollars.
