Speed of full cycle from taking one image to taking the next

Post by davidlandin »

Has anyone reported research on the speed of the cycle from taking one image to taking the next image, saving as RAW files on a Canon DSLR with a 10 rating SD card?

I ask this because Using my Nikon 5200 DSLR it is taking 40 seconds using a fast SD card, and the files are coming out about 24mb.

When I was using my basic 16mp Pentax camera I was getting a sequence of shots in about 10 seconds each - in jpg fromat - that camera doesn't offer RAW.

I am just wondering if Canons are faster that Nikons and if I should change my camera so I can boost my scanning thoughput.

I would try a faster sd card first. UHS-1 and UHS-3 are both supposed to be faster than class 10. My Nikon 5200 takes pictures much much faster than this when saving to a card. But I have only ever taken jpegs with it and haven't tried raw yet.

It is likely that the raw picture overwhelms the cache and then it is waiting on your sd card. A camera with a bigger cache might work better, but it is not a number I have seen advertised.

Just tested my Canon T2i (16 Mpix) and it takes about 5 to 7 seconds depending on the ISO settings (lower is faster). Add about 1 second to that time if you use RAW+JPG. I'm using an XC card (15MB/sec).

But the 550D rebel T2i writes to the card in 7 sec but you can take the next piqtures after 1 sec.

you have 3,4 frames/sec until the buffer is full and after that 1 frame/sec.

My cheapo Canon A4000 cameras also take about 7 seconds to store a RAW image (24MB). I wouldn't trust the reported Class on all SD cards. I've had cheap ($8 for 8GB) "Class 10" cards that were abysmally slow.

I have a d7000 and my wife a d3100 using Patriot LX series cards, class 10 ie min 10MB/s
Both have a through put of greater than than 40 s. I am taking that you timing is once the buffer is full. The d3100 raw files are only 13meg, 5 sec intervals is not a problem. For the d7000 raw files are 18-22meg and it is faster still. So I would expect d5200 to be more like the d7000 as it is newer.
The chart below shows buffer capacity. I would check at say JPEG normal, to first to see if you can get 100 shots before the buffer is full. Then what is the timing once the buffer is full.
40 sec does not seem right. Something is wrong.

A couple of screen shots that may help. A interesting discussion can be found at http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3373864
It would seem 3-5 sec should be achievable

If you have digiCamControl or you could down load it. It will allow you to set time intervals by the second. 4s on our D3100 seems ok. If you have different sd cards or able to borrow some you could do some testing.
