Raspberry Pi camera modules
- 2013 5 megapixel
- 2016 8 megapixel

But factor in the huge and growing smartphone market that drive camera R&D and it probably won't be long before we see pi camera modules that rival powershots in resolution and image quality.

Dear dtic,

I dont have high hopes for this. Current Smartphone-cameras are using multiple MIPI lanes (2 or 4 or even more) to connect to a camera. The RPi has only one MIPI-Lane as input and the only available camera in the market that has only one mipi-lane is the rpi-cam.

So this might become a reality, if the RPi4 or later models have 4 or more MIPI-Lanes, but as far as I know this is not planned.

smartphone cameras have high Megapixel but compared to a canon ixus or powershot or compared to a nikon coolpix smartphone cameras have very shitty optics.

cheers

How should I get my images from the camera into my PC? PTP (short for Picture Transfer Protocol) is the imageing industry standard for camera-computer communication.

I think there is a misunderstanding between you and Canon.

I think Canon means the official support for remote control of the camera. That has been done away long ago. My first Canon digital camera was the A311, and that could be operated from the PC, using the officially supplied PC software from Canon (BTW, Metro used this camera to take images for the customer ID card). When I had to replace the A310 in March 2009 with a A650, that one was without remote control.

CHDK did not rely on this built-in remote control facility, but did build its own communication. That was the function of the different firmware being loaded by CHDK in the camera. And CHDK itself did not support remote control; that is being added by an add-on module (don't know the name of it in this moment of time).

So remote control is still being supported for EOS-devices, and I believe that "EOS-devices" includes in this respect also the Powershot G-series cameras.

And of course, the mirrorless EOS-M series system cameras, which can also use EF-lenses with an adapter.

- remote configure (to set foccus)
- video flow (for online monitors)
- remote shooting

Stuff like that is maybe all we need : http://fr.aliexpress.com/item/AMKOV-AMK ... 33265.html
Funny, there is the Amdoer logo in the image of that offer, but that device is not listed on the Andoer official web page.

But I find it in eBay from a US seller, branded AMKOV. Next to it, the user is made aware of theSony Cyber-shot DSC-QX10 18,2 MP Digitalkamera for this, which was already mentioned on this forum. Both are intended as accessory to a mobile phone and both use WLAN and NFC to communicate with a mobile phone.

The Sony QX-10 and QX-100 require Android or the Apple iPhone OS. There is Android for Raspberry Pi...

BTW, the NFC is not for communicating data, only to ease the WLAN coupling process.

BTW 2, I read of a Sony QX-1, but have not (yet) seen any specifications.

One piece of good news is that there looks to be a new effort to port CHDK to the ELPH 180/IXUS 175 camera. It is still in early stages, but it will hopefully be complete before the ELPH 160 gets too hard to find:

I'm no expert on CHDK and related matters, but Sony and Cannon (and I'm guessing most 1st tier brand name camera manufacturers) allow remote WiFi access control (basic functions like viewing, zooming, shooting and even image transfer) of their a lot of their new point and shoot cameras. They currently have iPhone/iPad/Android apps.

Canon:
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/port ... patibility

Sony:
http://www.sony.com/electronics/playmemories
http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www ... ducts.html
https://www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/ ... _00-F00002

And some have written other apps to control the cameras so it seems an API is available:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... sonycamera

I'm sure these apps only control one camera, but it seems to me a custom app and/or PC based control software could control 2 cameras via WiFi, so would this be an option going forward?

Hi all,

Just to add another option to the discussion:
I found these type of camera's:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Resolution ... 2156175727

It is basically a high-res industrial usb camera, with interchangeable lenses
An lens is available for $30 dollars or less, for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/50mm-F1-4-C-Mou ... 2f02a62508
(Not sure which lens to pick for scanning, above is an example)

So about $300 total for one complete camera that according to the specs is compatible with usb drivers. If one doesn need the high-res, there are cheaper options available.
What are your thoughts, anyone tried such a camera? I hope it could provide a long lasting camera, that is designed to take a lot of pictures fast. I am tempted to test them or something similar.

Cheers,
Floris

Just a quick update on this. ELPH 180 cameras are now supported by CHDK. So the camera situation is not nearly so dire thanks to the brilliant efforts of reyalp and others in the CHDK community.

It also seems that Canon has pulled back from the yearly release-and-obsolescence cycle. So hopefully this means that the ELPH 180 cameras will continue to be available for some time into the future.
