Casio Exilim EX-FR100 camera module and controller

Post by L.Willms »

At first sight, this looked like the Sony DSC-QX 1/10/100 camera modules to me --

The camera comes with a separate controller with a touch panel display so that the module with controller can be used like a compact camera
The controller links to the camera via Bluetooth.
The controller can control one or two camera modules at the same time. One can buy the camera module separately.

Instead of with the controller, the camera can also be controlled by a "smartphone" which supports "Smart Bluetooth"

The camera module can connect to a PC via USB, but only for viewing or downloading images from the camera to the computer.
The camera module apparently connects only as a mass storage device and not with the PTP protocol (Picture Transfer Protocol).

• The Casio has only 10.2 megapixels 4000x3000 compared to 18.2 for the Sony.
• Fixed 2.8 f 2.87 mm (corresponding to 16 mm with a 35 mm film)
• only autofocus
• internal memory for up to 45 MB
• slot for memory cards microSD (up to 2GB), microSDHC (up to 32GB), microSXC (32 GB to 2 TB)
• USB
• tripod nut included in package

Our camera?
One big plus is the wireless remote control which is built in with this camera, and the ability to trigger two camera modules at the same time via wireless remote control.

The 10.2 megapixel with 4000x3000 pixels are sufficient for 300dpi of an ISO A4 sized page, and more dpi of smaller pages.

As a disadvantage I see the lack of zoom, which requires to adjust the distance of the camera to the page relative to the page dimensions. A worm drive for this in the book scanner would be helpful.

Autofocus and automatic exposure control can also be a problem depending paper and lighting.

I got my camera, used, via eBay:

Nice thing! But...

The lens is rather very wide angle, corresponding to 16 mm of a 35mm-Camera. This results in an angle of view of more than 90° which means an object distance of ~13 cm to cover a full ISO A4 page, and would be nearer for an A5 page. Computed with the help of "vision-doctor.com"

I think that this makes it unuseable for book scanning. Besides, the German Casio distribution company says that the additional camera module to be used by the controller in a two-camera setup, is no longer available. A pity, since there is another interesting application, namely 360° panorama videos with two camera modules mounted back to back.

And if Casio would see a market for camera modules with a longer focal length and best also fixed focus, as a companion for their "Book Turner BT-100".
