It appeared that approach to me as well, and I constructed my second scanner with the cameras appended to the platen. I'm back to having the cameras on tripods, not connected to the platen. For my situation, they're not by any means joined to the base, however, I feel that would be functional.

One issue which has the cameras connected to the platen presents is that it's progressively troublesome (and conceivably outlandish) to keep the camera and the book situated a similar path from shot to shot. The platen is put on the book somewhat better each time since it's being raised and brought down, and this influences how the shot casings the page.
