Thanks for sharing! I've been toying a bit on my own with methods for indexing the image to just a few colors to give more shades between all black and all white that binarization entails. It is awesome to read the notes of somebody who came up with a sophisticated method for doing it. It looks much more robust than what I was trying to do.

I have bookmarked this tool and will try it out myself.
