QuickPicZone - tool to quickly make Scan Tailor picture zone

Post by dtic »

After posting a brainstorming thread about picture zone workflows I decided to have a go at making a small helper program. Here it is! Windows only.

QuickPicZone is a helper tool for Scan Tailor Enhanced to make picture zones quickly.

How to use
1. Drag and drop a Scan Tailor black and white mode output file.tif
QPZ displays the matching file.jpg
2. Click and draw a rectangle to set a mixed mode picture zone
3. QPZ saves picture zone data to project file.jpg.scantailor
4. QPZ processes saved project file to output new .tif

Setup
Download and unzip QuickPicZone.
Requires Scan Tailor Enhanced
On first run QPZ ask you to set the path to scantailor-cli.exe

More details on help page within the program.

Note: several things have to be in place for QuickPicZone to work well.
- Your jpg images must only contain one book page per image.
- If the jpg images are very skewed then you need to deskew them some other way in advance, otherwise QPZ will misplace the picture zones. But if only slight deskew is needed then the picture zones QPZ sets will likely be accurate enough.
- you must previously have run the jpg in Scan Tailor black and white mode and saved a separate .scantailor project file for each image. You can do that using the cli version of Scan Tailor Enhanced.
- your jpg, tif and scantailor files must have a certain name and folder structure, as described in the QPZ help window.

update version 141114. New features:
Drop multiple .tif to do them in order
Preprocessing mode (control+tab): Drop .jpg folder to process all to .tif and .scantailor
Preprocessing mode (control+tab): Drop single .jpg to calculate DPI estimate

With the update you can use a folder with .jpg files in preprocessing mode to generate .tif and .scantailor files that come to have the correct directory structure for inputing the .tif files to QuickPicZone regular mode.

If you need to crop the .jpg (two page jpg or single page jpg) first then check out BookCrop for batch crop or SoloCrop for quick one by one cropping.
