Well, if you want to try the magic again...

Delete the temporary directories, reboot, then launch BSW.

One other thing to try: Try running webstart directly from the command line:

javaws http://bookscanwizard.sourceforge.net/run/bsw.jnlp

If that doesn't work I'll see about improving the directions for a manual install.. (As you noticed, they pretty assume you know a bit about java in order to make sense of them).

No luck on both counts unfortunately. It's a mystery to me why this seems to be a problem peculiar to my machine. I've got some programmer friends that I can ask about this. In the mean time, I'll wait for instructions--but if this is a pain, I'm sure there are better uses of your time, so I don't expect anything immediate. Thanks again.

umpausewhat,

Could you try this URL and see if it works better for you? I've tried packaging it differently which may work better.

Still no luck. I work with some guys who might be able to help with the manual install. I'll see them tonight. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for the efforts.

One more thought. I've been trying to figure out what the problem might be via google and I saw some discussions that indicated a potential problem with running java webstart on a 64-bit Windows OS. I am curious if this is part of the problem because when I just download java, the java console doesn't show up in my control panel. I also need the JRE download here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... index.html. When I download from that site, it asks me what kind of system I have--it then downloads "java 6 update 24 (64-bit)." When that is installed, the java console shows up in my control panel. However, if I uninstall the regular java 6 update 24 and go to the java website to confirm my version, it doesn't detect java on my machine; I also can't download the 64-bit JRE if I don't have the regular version installed already. So I'm wondering if I've got two versions of java running next to each other (potentially causing interference) or if the 64-bit version just adds something to the base version.

In any case, I tried to run your javaws command at the 32-bit command line. It still didn't work, but it produced a slightly different exception:

java.lang.SecurityException: illegal URL redirect
at com.sun.deploy.net.HttpUtils.followRedirects(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.deploy.net.BasicHttpRequest.doRequest(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.deploy.net.BasicHttpRequest.doGetRequestEX(Unknown Source)

at com.sun.javaws.Main.continueInSecureThread(Unknown Source)
at com.sun.javaws.Main$1.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)

I don't know if any of this makes a difference, but thought I'd include it if it helps make sense of things from the perspective of someone who actually knows something about java (i.e. not me).

I'll do some more looking (I actually need to get a handle on 32 bit vs. 64 bit webstart for work anyways....)

But one thing to try to get around that last exception, try this:

Code: Select all

javaw https://bookscanwizard.sourceforge.net/run/bsw.jnlp
(use https instead of http).

The new url didn't work either unfortunately, but I did muddle through the manual install and have bsw up and running again. The manual install was easier than I thought it would be. It makes me feel kind of dumb for bugging you so much with the webstart business. If you think it would be useful, I could describe the steps for the manual install for anyone else like me (i.e. problems with webstart, minimal java knowledge). Thanks again for all your help.

I'm glad you got it working, though its weird you were having so much problems with the webstart one.

Sure, if you want to write up the directions it would be very helpful.

I've checked in a new version of of Book Scan Wizard.

There's just one new feature: A Whiteout command that will let let you overwrite a portion of an image with a white polygon.

The command is "Whiteout", and it is also available by clicking on 2 or 4 points in the viewer, right clicking, and choosing "Whiteout"
