I started a build right now. I'm bundling these scanning-related programs:
  • Scan Tailor (git)
  • djvubind (hg)
  • pdfbeads (1.0.3)
  • Bindery (git)
  • Tesseract (svn)
  • Cuneiform (1.1.0)
  • ImageMagick (6.7.5.3)
Aside from that, the distro has:
  • Firefox
  • Thunderbird
  • Evince (Ubuntu packages it as well. It reads PDF, DjVu, PostScript and even multi-page TIFF)
  • File Roller (Ubuntu packages it as well. It extracts everything)
  • Java and Flash
  • Abiword (I could try bundling LibreOffice Writer instead)
  • Geany (text editor)
  • Banshee (audio player)
  • Gparted, just in case you need to partition anything. It's really awesome.
This is basically a fork of my rescue CD with a few tweaks and more software. I was aiming at a < 700mb ISO, but if you think that's not worth striving for, I can bundle everything you'd ever need in a 900-1,000 mb ISO file.

The LiveCD works with VirtualBox, so it should work with VMWare. I'll upload it somewhere once it finishes building. You can also boot the ISO via a USB stick or a CD, which will make bundling it much easier.

As for the more specific software (like the memory stick stuff), it shouldn't be too hard to make something.

I can't find any place to store the ISO (I'm out of space in my Dropbox account as well) and most file sharing sites have a 200mb limit, so I'll keep looking.

Meanwhile, just a quick update:
  • Automatic login to desktop
  • Shortcuts for Scan Tailor, Firefox, Bindery and Terminal
  • Support for most network adapters, including wireless and wired
Here are some screenshots (they might get clipped):

Did this ever get finished?

Have you found a place to host the ISO?

If not have you tried sourceforge.com? or asking ubuntu?

I would host it on my home linux server for you but it's not able to handle a lot of traffic.
One or two connections at a time would be about it. To many streams could bring down
my internet.

There was little interest in the project so I stopped maintaining it. I still run Arch Linux and the ArchISO scripts haven't changed a whole lot in six months, so I can try to rebuild the image some time this week.

As for hosting, I haven't found anything. I use GitHub for storing the code, but I don't have anywhere to upload the ISO. Now that I think of it, I could transmit it via a torrent once it's production ready, but test ISOs need to be stored somewhere as well.

Post a note if spmwii hosts it for you, or like I mentioned I can, but my won't allow too many streams to it
and if that's ok, send message.

Thanks
Bob

I haven't had much time to work on the LiveCD. The build process changed once again, so I have to redesign the entire ISO from scratch.

Ok. I just started playing around with the process today myself.

So I'm still a ways out.

I get the photo's taken, and used scan tailor on them. Next to read up how to get all the tiffs into pdf etc.

Thanks
Bob

Hi, i'm new to bookscanning but a live CD would be much welcommed...

I could install several tools on my mac but a Live cd would be much better since it would not mess up anything and if tools where partly mac and windows again a live cd would have everything needed in one place

only requirement from me is that it should be able to deliver books in epub format.. and i should be able to work with a single cam until i have the money for real scanner..
