Quality loss in djvu conversion. Depends on source dpi?

Post by 0kelvin »

Converted with abby. Is this loss of quality unavoidable? If I scan a book myself at 300 dpi and convert to djvu, the result is really good. If I download a huge PDF (300mb for instance) which seemed to be scanned at 300 dpi, the resulting djvu is also really good. However, if I download some scanned book at low dpi (I can tell it's 100 dpi by how pixelated it looks by zooming to 200%), the resulting djvu is pretty bad (text is barely readable, some letters become blurred to the point it appears a splotch, or text is so jaggied and blurred that it's unnaceptable. Background becomes filled with many grey splotches).
