Bummer, yeah that clearly didn't work. Definitely some significant diffusion and a shroud of some variety to block out the reflections would be needed. That's in the range of a lot more work and cost. I'd love to see what a high powered flash with a softbox or plastic diffuser would do, and if I can find a good deal on one of the hotshoe mounted varieties I'll see if it's in the range of enough power.
