The Deal Thread or How To Find Cheap Cameras
I'm starting this thread with the intention of posting good deals on cameras when we encounter them. From slickdeals.net I found this steal on Powershots -- $59 for A560's, refurbished:

FYI, I found that link at slickdeals.net. Another great site is dealnews.com, and the anandtech hot deals forums occasionally link up good stuff. If we all keep our eyes open, less people will have financial objections.

Re: The Deal Thread or How To Find Cheap Cameras
I just saw Powershot A590's at Radioshack for 109.99 -- regular price.
Re: The Deal Thread or How To Find Cheap Cameras
i looked at radio shack site and it does not look like they have A590's anymore. they have A480's which is not in the stereodata list. newegg.com also only has the A480's. the spects on this camera look good for the price. i wonder if stereodata will support this camera in the future. any other recommendations for some good cheap DIY book scanning cameras?

I just saw them yesterday in-store at Radioshack. You might want to call around.

I've spent the last day or two searching for cheap cameras for my own DIY Scanner.... here's a link to google's listing of places selling the A590IS
http://www.google.com/products/catalog? ... scoring=tp Looks like $100 shipped is the best it gets.

$100 shipped is a great deal... nice find. I know adorama.com had them a bit cheaper at one point.

Re: The Deal Thread or How To Find Cheap Cameras
I found that with careful eBaying and craigslist...ing, I was able to pick up three A590ISs for no more than $75 each (and one in the $50-something range). Used, obviously, but in good shape. Leaves more money for expensive glass platens...

Re: The Deal Thread or How To Find Cheap Cameras
Found a Canon A590IS with a non-functional LCD for 60 shipped (planning to set it up using AV out w/ TV and hopefully remote capture using a laptop.
Here's a nice review of this model that shows lens aberrations at different zooms (http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/A ... 590ISA.HTM). It indicates that you'll have the least distortion at a moderate lens length rather than full zoom or wide angle (which is pretty standard).
Just in case it helps.
