Maybe it is to late but i would recommend a taggin system instead of forum separation, then a topic can be taggt e.g. as hardware and trigger or hardware and light and so on

1. The shadow topic seems to do that: http://wiki.phpbb.com/Shadow_topic. It provides a redirect to the new topic, which Google will hopefully follow while crawling.

2. Yep, that sounds good.

The Hardware category receives the most attention, so I'd imagine you want to do that the quickest. Maybe assign people certain post types to migrate? All the other categories aren't very active, so they shouldn't be a problem.

I think this sort of structure might work:
  • Hardware
    • Tutorials/How-To's
    • Completed Builds
    • Cameras
    • Lighting
    • New Tech
    • (maybe a category for incomplete build threads)
  • Software
    • Tutorials: User-generated tutorials and how-to's.
    • LiveCD: Nobody seems to need it, but it'll give it a but more publicity
    • Scripts and Software: Software packages and releases, software people find online, threads created by programmers/script writers.
    • Help: Requests for help with software.
I'm not sure what to do about the other categories, though. Maybe somebody should setup a Google Docs document?

I don't see a lot of value in separating incomplete from complete builds, especially since incomplete builds often become complete builds over time.

Since the other categories are less active, I'm not too worried about them as of this moment. Most of the best info is in Hardware and Software.

I DO think the LiveCD has real value, but we just don't have a lot of people around here who know how to make or use one. There's always the possibility that a LiveCD with a bunch of software script-chained together would be more easily constructed than, say, a custom version of ST. I'm open to anything that reduces our total software pain.

Some part of me wants to give special treatment to the new hackerspace scanner, but the current single-thread treatment is clearly not sustainable. Or do we just merge it into Hardware and Software alongside all the other builds?

Anonymous2, if you have a little time to help with this, I'll give you Teh Mod Powerz here in a little bit... Scann as well, and anyone else who would like to do stuff.

Thanks to revjoe we now have ATOM feeds for the whole site, so you can subscribe to stuff with Google Reader and other ATOM capable readers. I'm now working on a new search function, with his instructions.

Use it carefully, jedi!

Now, how do we create the new structure without ruining the old structure?
Should we:

1. rename the old sections first, like Hardware (old) and Software (old) and then create new sections named Hardware and Software with the appropriate subsections, and move them there, OR
2. Just add the subsections to the existing Hardware and Software and start organizing...

or

3. ???
