Chapter Recognition

I've been sent some scans to play with before I start scannning my own documents\books, and on my linux system, I can see the basic concencept of scanning etc. but ideally I'd like to buid a searchable pdf, with a table of contents, the basic scanning is not a problem, but is there any automated or semi automated ways of adding the table of contents given that mosts of my books have sections that are in the for of 1,1 1.1, 1.2, 2, 2.1 etc ??
