"Last March we discussed Google's patent for a rapid book scanning system. This article describes and provides pictures of how the system works in practice. Google is secretive, but the system's inner workings were apparently divulged by University of Tokyo researchers who wrote a research article on essentially identical technology. There are also videos of robotic page flippers and information about how Google wants to use music to help humans flip pages."

Where do I get a cell phone with 500 fps video capability? For that matter, is there an affordable (under $1000) standalone video that shoots 500 fps?

I agree that their technique is promising -- every gadget I use was once just an idea. At this point, though, even their dewarping example has large portions of the page being lopped off, and it's the top margin rather than just the inner margin. It needs a lot more development before I'm going to let myself get excited about the prospect of "page flip" scanning.
