improve contrast of images

I noticed with preview I was able to improve the photos I take of the book pages. The problems is I have to go through one by one and adjust the parameters. I was able with mac's automater to make this process slightly less tedious but the process still took about 25 minutes, to adjust 80 images. If any one knows of some software (preferably mac) that can adjust a huge folder of images (sometimes up to a 1000) that would be great.
