3D printed book scanner no glass
September 2015 I have posted a "Articulated wooden bookscanner" project.
Finely I have 3D printed my scanner
This scanner has no glass frame, because it gives a better contrast.
This scanner is not aimed for big production, but it is easy to use and gives good results.
Attached, the FreeCAD and dxf files

Re: 3D printed book scanner no glass
Hello Jp
A couple of questions
1) I use Freecad 0.15 and the scanner_simple_05 appears incomplete. So is correct the soft that I use to open the file or I need another
2) Do you build one and if yes, do you have a picture of the scanner with a book
3) I suppose that the model can be scale up with the desing files
Regards and congratulations for the design

Hello Gaston,
> A couple of questions
> 1) I use Freecad 0.15 and the scanner_simple_05 appears incomplete. So is correct the soft that I use to open the file or I need another
My version is :
OS: Xubuntu 14.04.4 LTS
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.16.6698 (Git)
Build type: None
Branch: master
Hash: ca7c5d31a4d61f32a25b71025b14641a6e378328
Python version: 2.7.6
Qt version: 4.8.6
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 6.8.0.oce-0.17
I have two ppa :
http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-community/ppa/ubuntu
http://ppa.launchpad.net/freecad-mainta ... ily/ubuntu
I started with FreeCad in October 2015, and in January, this was mi first "serious" drawing...
I just proceed to a little clean-up, can you open it now ?
> 2) Do you build one and if yes, do you have a picture of the scanner with a book
See attached.
It takes about 30 minutes for 150 pages.
The pictures are then cropped-turned with david's batch process in Gimp 2.8
After that GPRename is used to change the folder names (even and odd) and convert to create a PDF.
It takes 20 minutes.
> 3) I suppose that the model can be scale up with the desing files
Not with FreeCAD, you must redraw :-/
Maybe the individual parts ?
> Regards and congratulations for the design
Thank you

Re: 3D printed book scanner no glass
Thanks Jp
Now I can open and is complete.
The model finished is amazing .
I have one more question. Do you export from the freecad the plastic parts to a 3D printer ?
If you have the stl files I will appreciate
Thanks

Bonjour Gaston,
> Thanks Jp
You're welcome
> Now I can open and is complete.
Cool
> The model finished is amazing .
Easy to build (the 3D printer do the most) and finely easy to use.
I have glued (polyurethane sealant Bostik PU39) a welding rod ø3.2mm in each vertical aluminium angle of the book frame in order to strengthen them.
> I have one more question. Do you export from the freecad the plastic parts to a 3D printer ?
Yes, from FreeCAD > export to STL > import STL in RepetierHost > slicer tab > Slice with slic3r
> If you have the stl files I will appreciate
Of course see attached.
You have to mirror some parts in RepetierHost or in your favorite software
At your disposal for any request.

Re: 3D printed book scanner no glass
This looks pretty cool. When I saw the rendering before, I thought it was just an idea for a scanner. I had no idea that you actually built it!
How are you triggering the camera?
What are the metal lengths you are using to help mount the lights? They look kinda like drawer slides. Is that to make the lights adjustable?
Also, can you show how it folds up? A short video of this would be awesome.
Thanks so much for actually posting a photo of it. It is now much clearer how the whole thing actually comes together.

It took a while, but recently the last improvements were done
> How are you triggering the camera?
Simply by pressing the button (see attached picture).
Two series of shots are taken : the even pages and the odd pages
The camera settings :
AF-mode multi-area
Manual speed and iris opening (ie 1/50" @ F4, 100 ISO)
2 Megapixel for pocket size book
>What are the metal lengths you are using to help mount the lights? They look kinda like drawer slides.
See DXF and/or PDF attached
Only 2 (two) DIN Mounting Rail, height=15 mm, 35 mm, length=300 mm, Steel

The other DIN rail :
DIN Mounting Rail, height=7.5 mm, 35 mm, Steel

As soon as possible.

Here a little video during the scanning of an old magazine (books are easier to manipulate)
